Indian Spices

Indian spices are as versatile a foodstuff as you will find in any type of cuisine. Added to meats or vegetables they impart extra dimensions in flavour and bouquet. Indian spices are so well regarded because of their variety, this directly related to the many different types of herbs that grow in the subcontinent’s massively varied climates.  Well-known spices include, mint, coriander, cardamom and ginger. In addition to their use in food they are also applied to certain cosmetics, perfumes and pharmaceuticals.

The production and trade in spices has been a vital part of Indian economic life since, at least, the Middle Ages, when European travelers first noticed their existence and began buying them for use back in Europe. Today, that trade flourishes, one of the reasons being that of the 109 spices specified by the ISO, India grows almost 70% of them.
